We plan to remake Tolan Square by removing the curbs and raising the center so that the entire space is on one level. The entire area will be covered with patterned pavers and large planters, and it will include several features for enhanced use and seasonal access. Together we can make the centerpiece of our downtown an attractive, welcoming space!
A place to honor
During the past year our community has lost two citizens who have made towering contributions to Milan. These two were part of a trio of citizens who founded the Greater Milan Area Community Foundation. As we dedicate this square, we will be celebrating the lives of Millard Phillips, Isabelle Schultz, and Don Harkness.
The New Look for Tolan Square
Having the Square all on one level with six very large planters providing lots of greenery will make this space vibrant and accessible. This campaign will also focus on completing several important improvements that will add to the space and make it welcoming for all seasons and times:
- A new style of street light in Tolan Square that focuses the light downward.
- Electric lines running under Tolan Square to provide power for events that occur in the Square.
- Gas lines for two future fire pits during winters in Tolan Square.
- Sprinkler lines running underground to water the flower beds and stormwater lines under Tolan Square to keep the space dry.
